About Wemoon

Susan Powell, the woman who created Wemoon

Susan Powell has always been inspired by beauty. As an Australian dress designer, she loved to envelop women in the transformative colour and flow of fabrics. She saw how beautiful clothes enhanced a women’s inner radiance. Eventually the fashion industry was not enough for Susan’s inquiring heart and mind. Stirred by the miracles of nature she was drawn to work in horticulture. Unknown to her, this change in her work would transform her life, and eventually touch the lives of thousands of women worldwide.

Susan was as intrigued by the science of propagation and the cyclical nature of plants as she was horrified by the emphasis on fertilisers, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides and other chemicals. She soon turned her focus to organic gardening. Moving to the rural farming areas of far north Queensland in Australia, Susan lived and worked on organic farms. Living a natural lifestyle she experienced a growing understanding of her own body. Now in her twenties, she fell pregnant with the second of two daughters and it was a natural decision to put motherhood ahead of career.

As the girls grew older Susan shared her love of nature with them, eventually moving south to Byron Bay in northern New South Wales. So as not to feel isolated at this time, Susan joined some local women’s groups, sharing thoughts and hopes with like-minded people. She set herself a goal of creating an ethical line of business and turned to the women around her for inspiration and support. Having kept her interest in dress design and fabrics, the concept of creating beautiful sanitary pads that could be used in place of disposable napkins was a logical step.

Susan draws inspiration and energy from the stunning beauty of Byron Bay and the surrounding hinterland. She employs local women in her business and practices an equitable distribution of profit. Susan developed all Wemoon’s products out of concern for the environment and for women’s health and wellbeing. She believes in the power of menstrual blood, and encourages women to nurture their bodies and menstrual cycles, promoting self-empowerment and healthy periods by choosing beautiful, washable pads not destined for the rubbish dump and avoiding ''disposable' feminine hygiene products and associated chemicals.
